The University of Newcastle has announced it will open a new research centre at its campus in the city to help students and scientists across the world.
The school’s new research and research-focused centre will house its latest generation of advanced research facilities, as well as provide a space for international students to receive an education on their new home and new research tools.
A research hub, known as the Newcastle Innovation and Enterprise Hub, is being established at Newcastle University on the campus.
While the facility is now open for use, it will open later this year for the Newcastle branch.
Professor of chemistry Richard Aitken and Professor of physical chemistry Dr Chris Johnson joined Professor Aitken and Professor Johnson as staff, working together in the hub to establish the new facilities and bring together the school and the surrounding community.
“A hub at Newcastle University is an incredibly valuable building block to support all of our future innovation in Australia and globally,” Professor Aitken said.
“These innovative new technologies and materials are currently driving some of the most exciting opportunities in science and engineering.
“These materials are creating a broad variety of advanced research and innovation opportunities for the world, and it’s exciting that these opportunities are now being explored, developed and harnessed across Australia at Newcastle.
“The university now has the opportunity to serve as an important catalyst for the world’s most innovative researchers to find innovative and sustainable ways of using these materials to enable economic growth and to make a lasting impact on the world.”
The Newcastle Innovation and Enterprise Hub will help support the school’s research and development efforts across the world.

The facility has a five-year pilot phase and is being built by the private equity firm Ocado.
Newcastle has also signed up the International Innovation Foundation (IIF) and the Global Innovation Initiative to fund research projects on advanced research and innovations in international contexts.
An international centre is expected to be built at Newcastle University by the end of 2020 as part of a broader commitment by the university to boost the use of Australia
